Pat McGrath: A Boss of Beauty

Pat McGrath

British-born Pat McGrath is one of the most influential make-up artists. With her namesake brand, Pat McGrath Labs, she has become the first Black woman to own a billion-dollar cosmetics brand. While McGrath was not formally trained, her passion for makeup was solidified after taking an Art Foundation Course while in college. She enjoyed the idea that each makeup creation looks uniquely different, some bold, others more subtle.

Once McGrath moved to London in the 1980s, she began working with luxury designers. However, her big break came almost ten years later when Giorgio Armani hired her as a collaborator on their cosmetics line. After working with these major brands, Pat McGrath decided to launch her brand, Pat McGrath Labs, in 2015. Her brand, just like work, focuses on providing high-quality, adventurous, unique, and maximum impact products. Pat McGrath Labs offers an array of cosmetics from eyeshadows, foundations, lipsticks, and more. In 2019, the brand was the top-selling beauty line in Selfridges, a well-known store in the United Kingdom. In the United States, Pat McGrath Labs is sold exclusively in Sephora and on the brand’s website.

In addition to her brand, Pat McGrath has worked as Lead Makeup Artist for countless luxury runway shows and has won numerous awards for her work, including repeatedly making the Top 10 Most Influential Black British People for Powerlist. McGrath is also the first Makeup Artist to be appointed Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire.
